Mitchell Marner Nominated For King Clancy Memorial Trophy
Not long before Mitch Marner was announced on Monday as the Maple Leafs’ nominee for the 2019-20 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas noted the 23-year-old’s growth.
“What I’ve seen from Mitch has been, especially since the lockdown started, a great ability for him to continue take more and more ownership of his career,” Dubas said. “He’s always got that gregarious and infectious way about him that brings great energy to the rink — and now you’re starting to see that go from a boyish sort of energy and enthusiasm to really mature.
“He’s at the end of his fourth year in the league and (there’s) a greater sense of urgency in the fact that realizing that this is a very good team, and if we’re going to go from being very good to great, he’s going to have to be one of the drivers of it.”
The trophy is presented to the NHL player who “best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community.”
There’s no question Marner has embraced fully being a member of the Leafs off the ice as well, whether it’s his contact with fans via social media or the work done by the Marner Assist Fund, which raises money for various community sectors, including vulnerable children.
